Biography of Edgar Clark of Everton

Edgar Clark, county collector of Dade County, Missouri, was born in Benton County, Missouri, in 1841. He was the son of John B. Clark, a New Jersey native and cabinet-maker, and Margaret (Homer) Clark from Pennsylvania. The family moved to Missouri in 1837. Edgar enlisted in the Union Army in 1862 and served until 1865. Post-war, he clerked in a general store and later co-owned a business. Elected county collector in 1888, he married Eliza Morris in 1870, and they had four children. A Republican, his first vote was for Lincoln. Edgar was active in the I.O.O.F. and the G.A.R.

Biography of Joseph W. Carmack of Morgan Township

Joseph W. Carmack, a farmer and justice of the peace in Morgan Township near Dadeville, Missouri, was born on May 26, 1838, in Overton County, Tennessee. He was the son of John and Elizabeth (Chapin) Carmack. John Carmack, of Scotch-Irish descent, moved to Dade County in 1853 and died there in 1856. Elizabeth, born in 1809, lived with Joseph at the age of seventy-nine. Joseph, a lifelong resident of the family home, had three well-cultivated farms. He served as a Union officer during the Civil War and had been justice of the peace since 1877. A respected Republican, he also handled pension claims and had a background in teaching and mercantile business.

Biography of James M. Carlock of Morgan Township

James M. Carlock, a farmer and stock-raiser in Morgan Township, was born in Dade County, Missouri, on October 25, 1848. He was the son of Lemuel L. Carlock, an early settler from Tennessee, and Angeline (Davidson) Carlock. James enlisted in the Union Army during the Civil War, serving from 1864 to 1865. He married Mary Tarrant on June 6, 1869, and they had two children, Harry L. and Virgil. James initially farmed near Greenfield before relocating to his 160-acre property. Biography of Franklin Carlock

Franklin Carlock, the youngest of eleven siblings, was educated at common county schools and raised on a farm. At twenty-three, he married Susan Wheeler, daughter of James and Barbara Wheeler, Tennessee natives who settled in Dade County, Missouri, around 1837. Susan died in April 1887, leaving Franklin with seven sons and one daughter. Later that year, he married Sarah Starr, daughter of Charles O’Kelly. Franklin farmed in Polk Township until 1881, then moved to Everton, where he built the first dwelling and operated the Everton House. He later owned the Ozark House and ran a furniture and undertaking business. A Republican, he was a member of the Cumberland Presbyterian Church.

Biography of Charles S. Cannady of Dade County

Charles S. Cannady, born on May 6, 1867, in Bartholomew County, Indiana, was a successful harness and saddlery dealer in Dade County, Missouri. He was the eldest son of Henry H. Cannady, a farmer and wagon-maker of Irish descent, and Louisa Cannady. The family moved from Indiana to Kansas in 1872, where Charles received his education, and later to Dade County in 1882. In August 1887, Charles opened his harness and saddlery shop, establishing a reputation for quality goods and fair prices. He maintained a stock valued at about $800 and was a dedicated Republican.

Biography of William R. Bowles of Greenfield

William R. Bowles, born in 1857 in Greenfield, Missouri, was an attorney and editor of the Dade County Advocate. He was the son of Dr. Samuel B. Bowles and Elizabeth J. (Vaughan) Bowles. Ex-Judge Orlando H. Barker, born in Delaware County, Ohio, in 1843, was a prominent farmer and Jersey cattle breeder in Lockwood Township. Son of Daniel B. and Rebecca (McCoy) Barker, he served in the Union Army during the Civil War, achieving the rank of first lieutenant. Post-war, he studied law and was admitted to the Ohio bar in 1868. Barker moved to Greenfield, Missouri, where he practiced law and served as probate judge. In 1883, he transitioned to farming near Lockwood. Married to Alma Mills, they had six children. He was a Republican, an I.O.O.F. member, and affiliated with the G.A.R. and Presbyterian Church.

Dr. Charles Aaron Badgley, born in 1854 in Auglaize County, Ohio, was a prominent dentist in Greenfield, Missouri. He was the son of George and Martha (Watkins) Badgley, and grandson of George and Rebecca (Eddy) Badgley. His great-great-great-grandfather, George Badgley, emigrated from England around 1740. Dr. Badgley studied dentistry in Illinois and began his practice in Greenfield in 1879. He married Georgia M. McDowell and had four children. He was a respected member of the community, the only dentist in Dade County, and active in the Presbyterian Church and Republican politics.

Biography of William Allison of Smith Township

William Allison, born in Bedford County, Tennessee, in 1824, was a farmer and stock-raiser in Smith Township, Missouri. He was the son of James and Sarah (Lee) Allison. The family moved to Ray County, Missouri, in 1830 and later settled near Greenfield in Dade County, becoming some of the first white settlers in the area. William served in the Mexican-American War and spent several years mining in California, Idaho, and Montana. Returning to Dade County in 1870, he farmed 160 acres. He married Mary Ann Taylor in 1867 and had four children. Allison was a Democrat and a member of the Baptist Church.
